Sir, - Noel MacCanna (July 31st) asks why UK prices for reviewed books are usually shown rather than the prices in Irish pounds.

That question is important but there are more pertinent issues: Why are the books reviewed predominantly published in the UK? Some Irish writers are published abroad but many authors utilise the flourishing Irish publishing industry. It may not be perfect, but why are its products often ignored in the review pages of The Irish Times and by other sectors of the Irish media?

The issues outlined above are important for myself and many other members of the Irish Writers' Union. - Yours, etc.,
