Madam, - Roy Keane walked out on the Irish soccer team in Saipan. The argument over whether or not he was justified split the Irish public in two.
He was subsequently offered a place by the new manager, Brian Kerr, before the friendly match against Scotland.
After some dithering, Keane confirmed his retirement from international football.
Now, after he makes an ambiguous comment on a possible comeback, the debate has restarted.
Keith Duggan (Sports, February 21st) goes so far as to refer to a Keane comeback as "the dream scenario". Mr Duggan is entitled to his opinion.
The dream scenario, in my view, is for Keane to adhere to his decision to retire, thereby allowing the players who have represented their country through thick and thin to continue doing so, as they did so ably against Brazil last week. - Yours, etc.,
