Madam, - As a 34-year-old child of the Tiger I was amused by Edel Morgan's piece "Soft landing or hard times ahead?" (Property, June 8th). It seems that due to the horrors of living in boom-town Ireland, first-time buyers are buying "in a couple". They are "spending an average of 27 per cent of their combined income on mortgage repayments" and (most tellingly) 51 per cent said "their mortgage repayments restricted their lifestyle".
Was it not always thus? Is this not the way it should be? And are we now so caught up in our sense of entitlement that we want to have our house and eat it too?
- Yours, etc,
DES DORIS, Monkstown, Co Dublin.
