Sir, - I would like to reassure customers of Eircom that, despite the new corporate image, all is not lost. The level of service is completely unchanged.

My phone malfunctioned on October 23rd, which meant that my monitored alarm system could not work either. Since both services are provided by Eircom, I rang the repair line (by mobile phone) to report the fault in the expectation that before long all would be resolved. Alas, no: Eircom does not provide a weekend repair service, although the operator thought I might be able to arrange a call-out for £100.

Sadly, this could not be confirmed because her supervisor was not contactable, but she did leave a message on his mobile phone, or so I was told. Obviously I could not be given an approximate date/time for my phone to be repaired and I was advised to report the fault again after the bank holiday.

So there it is! One can only hope not to be burgled on the same weekend that the phone is out of order. So when you admire the new and expensive logo, remember it is a case of changing the style only, not the substance. - Yours, etc.,
