Sir, - Residents of Dingle are privileged, perhaps unknowingly. We have a two-acre green, square in the centre of the town called the Orchard or Town Park, which could be developed into something unique. However, Kerry County Council has decided that 40 per cent of it should be rezoned for car parking. In doing this they appear to have ignored the wishes of the majority of the townspeople, if a public meeting in October 1999 in Benners Hotel is an indication of people's wishes.
A short time ago, the focal point of the town was the harbour, with the sea beside the main road. Now we have a car and coach park there. While other towns have tried to bring the water into the town, we have succeeded in pushing it out! It would be a shame if car parking spoiled another amenity.
Many people are rightly concerned about the unruly behaviour and unsociable activities going on at night time in the Orchard, but it is probable that proper lighting, locked entrances and policing could correct these concerns.
I understand that this rezoning is almost a "done deal". However, people power is a force and I appeal to civic-minded citizens of the town to make their views known to Kerry County Council. - Yours, etc.
Pat Moore, Grey's Lane, Dingle, Co Kerry.
