Ger Brennan has emerged as the clear favourite to become the new Dublin senior football manager after stepping down as Louth senior football boss.
Brennan’s surprise decision to quit the Wee County comes just three days after Dessie Farrell resigned from his role at the helm of the capital’s footballers.
In the second of a three-year term, Brennan this summer guided Louth to a first Leinster title in 68 years, beating Meath in the provincial decider at Croke Park in May.
The St Vincent’s clubman was expected to remain in charge for a third year but on Tuesday he informed the county board he would not be returning in 2026.

In stepping away from Louth, Brennan stated: “I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for what has been an extraordinary journey with this incredible organisation.
“My sincere appreciation goes to the Louth County Board, the Louth clubs, and all the staff at Darver for their tremendous support throughout these past two years. The foundation of support you provided made our work possible.
“Most importantly, I want to express my profound gratitude to the Louth senior footballers. It has been an absolute privilege to be part of your journey these past two years.”
Brennan is widely tipped to succeed Farrell as Dublin manager, with his Louth departure adding fuel to that speculation.
Brennan, who works as a Gaelic games development executive in UCD, was appointed Louth manager in October 2023, succeeding Mickey Harte after the Tyrone man made a swift and unexpected exit to take over Derry.

Which Irish players have impressed for the Lions?
Following Brennan’s announcement, Louth chairman Seán McClean stated: “Throughout his time with us, we have had the privilege of witnessing the extraordinary dedication, professionalism and inspiring leadership that Ger consistently demonstrated.
“From the moment he joined our organisation, his devotion to Louth football has been absolute and unwavering. He has worked with tremendous energy and purpose to develop our players, energise our loyal supporters, and strengthen the sport throughout the county.
“On behalf of everyone at Louth GAA, we want to express our profound gratitude to Ger for the transformative influence he has had during his time with us.
“The high standards he established, the ambitious vision he shared with us all, and the truly memorable experiences he created will continue to inspire and guide us for years to come.
“As Ger’s chapter with Louth GAA closes, we wish him continued success and fulfilment in all his future endeavours, both in football and beyond. He will always hold a special place in the Louth GAA family, and our doors will forever remain open to him.”
Louth’s Leinster under-20 winning manager Fergal Reel would be seen as an early front-runner for the county’s senior vacancy, while Gavin Devlin may be another contender given his work with underage teams.
