Nelson Oliveira completes solo run to take Vuelta stage

Irish rider Nicolas Roche comes home third in Tarazona

Portugal's Nelson Oliveira attacked from the breakaway for a solo win on stage 13 of the Vuelta a Espana.

Oliveira (Lampre-Merida) broke free alone with 30 kilometres of the 178km route from Calatayud remaining to win in Tarazona.

Frenchman Julien Simon (Cofidis) beat Nicolas Roche (Team Sky) in a sprint among the 23 remaining breakaway riders for second place, as the Irishman finished third, his second top three finish of the race.

Fabio Aru (Astana) was 36th, four minutes 48 seconds behind, to retain the race leader's red jersey.

Italian Aru leads Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) by 27 seconds, with Tom Dumoulin (Giant-Alpecin) three seconds further back in third.

Roche is nine minutes and 38 seconds behind Aru in 16th place.

Saturday’s 215km stage from Vitoria to the summit of Alto Campoo Fuente del Chivo could shake up the general classification standings.
