The European Central Bank (ECB) has said there is no need for the public to hold excess cash for the transition to the year 2000 as its financial system is well prepared to cope with the changeover.

However, the bank also said its financial system would be able to meet any liquidity requirements resulting from an increase in the demand for banknotes, if the need arises.
