The Irish energy supplier Vayu Energy is to expand into Northern Ireland and target the business market in a move that is likely to initially create up to 20 jobs.

The independent energy supplier will supply natural gas, electricity and renewables to large scale users in the industrial and commercial sectors.

Vayu was awarded a gas shipping and supply license in the Republic in 2003 and subsequently launched its electricity supply business in 2007.

It says it currently supplies 20 per cent of the Republic of Ireland’s largest natural gas business customers,15 per cent of the mid-sized gas user segment and has become a leading supplier of 100 per cent green electricity to businesses.

The company is now pledging to “provide businesses in Northern Ireland with a competitive alternative.”

Peter Girvan, energy specialist at Vayu Energy, said: "We see a clear opportunity for businesses in Northern Ireland to gain access to much more competitive prices on the wholesale markets.

“In particular, we’re seeing significant demand for procurement solutions that combine innovations in risk management with hands on market analysis to minimise energy costs.”

The company intends to make renewable energy a key focus in the North and is confident that renewables will play a major role in electricity production in Northern Ireland in the immediate future.
