Jeff Bezos, founder and chief executive officer of Amazon and new owner of the Washington Post, has met staff at the newspaper.

It reports that the "Jeffrey P Bezos era at the Washington Post had its symbolic beginning at 4.30pm [on] Tuesday, when the high-tech magnate indulged in a decid- edly low-tech ritual: striking a triangle to summon editors for their afternoon meeting."

The newspaper reported that Mr Bezos offered little detail on his vision for the business. He agreed last month to buy the Post for $250 million, with media- watchers across the globe curious to see how he might translate his success on the internet into a cure for the ailing world of newspapers. He has promised financial support for the publication.

The Washington Post had been owned by the Graham family for about 80 years.
