You might play fast and loose with expiration dates on some food, but when it comes to meat, it’s a different story. But how much meat do you bin every year because it has reached its expiration date, that could be safe to eat?
A new "electronic nose" could be the answer. Peres will check beef, pork, chicken and fish for volatile organic compounds, some of which can be odourless, and use a number of other sensors to determine how fresh the food is, or whether it has been left out of the fridge for a while.
You simply point it at the meat, click and it will transmit the information via bluetooth to a smartphone app. Due to ship in July, the device could help you to reduce both your food wastage and your chances of dicing with food poisoning.
