Keep your emails hush-hush With HushMail

Term and conditions are long and boring. They do, however, become more interesting when the small print states that your email provider has the right to read your private emails “if legally required to do so or if we have a good faith belief that such access [is reasonably necessary]”.

This is part of Apple's iCloud terms and conditions and is pretty similar to those of Google and Microsoft. These services are free and agreeing to the T&Cs is the price we pay. Try out something like HushMail if you want OpenPGP-encrypted mail and for the paid version it hides your originating IP address.

This was discovered after an analysis by digital marketing company EightyTwenty for the Twitter Partnership Programme from Bank of Ireland. It looked at all geo-tagged tweets coming from Ireland in July 2013 and found that when it comes to tweets per county on a monthly basis Westmeath, Clare and Longford are the laggards.

Messaging off the grid with FireChat
Taking advantage of the new multipeer connectivity network feature in iOS7's latest update, FireChat is a messaging app that allows text messaging even when your mobile signal disappears or your wifi is down.

It uses Bluetooth and wifi to connect to other iPhones nearby so it really only works if you’re in an urban area with plenty of other devices. No sign-up is required and messaging is anonymous so it could come in handy for free communication at festivals, in universities, etc.

Incidentally, FireChat is from OpenGarden, a similar platform for Mac, PC and Android.
