A Galway medical device company will expand its workforce with an additional 80 jobs over four years, the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment has said.

Up to 40 of the new jobs at Contech Medical International Ltd at Parkmore Business Park in Galway will be filled by the middle of this year, Ms Harney said yesterday.

The expansion, when implemented, will bring total employment at the company to 118.

Most of the new jobs will be in operations, but there will also be opportunities in engineering, quality control and administration. Additional "out-sourcing" business from existing and new customers in Europe and north America has been cited as the main reason for the development.

Contech Medical is the world's leading "guidewire dispenser supplier".

Based in Rhode Island in the United States, the Galway branch was established in 1994 to provide sub-contract support to the medical device industry throughout Europe.

Most of its raw materials are supplied by Irish firms, the Tánaiste noted.

Welcoming the development, Ms Harney said that it would significantly increase the Galway company's value and role in the parent firm's worldwide business.
