You know global warming is a serious threat. You know the fossil-fuel industry is in denial. But did you know the same vested interests are researching geoengineering as an alternative to the obvious solution of reducing carbon emissions? Scientists believe spraying clouds with sulphur or seeding oceans with iron could block or absorb solar emissions. That would leave us free to destroy our planet twice: through greenhouse gases and then through interfering with the ecosystem in an attempt to mitigate the effects of our negligence. In his crystal-clear analysis Clive Hamilton warns against “Promethean recklessness” and calls for “utmost caution and deep reflection”. It’s depressing to realise what we have done and still want to do to our planet, but hope lies in thinkers such as Hamilton, if only we heed them before it’s too late.
