We've not seen any sign of techno's merry prankster and his more mischievous tendencies in a while. Syro is the first album from Richard D James as Aphex Twin in 13 years, yet the maverick off-road forays that the Limerick- born producer made his rep are nowhere in sight. But while Syro may lack that kind of WTF factor, James is drawing from all parts of his deck with verve. Minipops 67 splices soulful vocals with wonky techno to great effect; XMAS_EVET0 works on a liquid, hypnotic groove; and PAPAT4 [155][PINEAL MIX]is a frantic rush of submarine bass and nigh-on-discordant distraction. James can also make nice, and the beautiful piano piece closer Aisatsana is lush and alluring. There may be little here to frighten the horses, but it's fascinating stuff. facebook.com/aphextwinafx
