This is Damon Riddick’s first new album in six years, though in that time there have been plenty of sightings of the Californian funk cadet.
Be it his 7 Days of Funk album with Snoop Dogg or collaborations with producers and musicians such as Ariel Pink, Riddick has been redefining just what the funk means to him at every opportunity.
Invite the Light shows he's learned from the masters (Prince, Parliament, Rick James and other funky freaks) and is now happy to find his own woozy, wonky way.
It makes for an expansive, charming, seductive and boogieful album.
There's a rake of guests onboard (Q-Tip, Nite Jewel, Kid Sister), but Riddick is firmly at the controls of this spaceship and happy to take us to new intergalactic heights on O.B.E., Surveillance Escape and the prime-time squelch of Kaint Let 'Em Change Me.
