Three classics which stirred things up in different decades: Debussy's supremely sensual
Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune
in December 1894; Stravinsky's raw, earthy, propulsively wild
Rite of Spring
in May 1913; and the ever-changing colours and unrelenting rhythm of Ravel's
Boléro
in November 1928. Philippe Jordan, the Zürich-born music director of the Opéra National de Paris, manages to have his cake and eat it, keeping a tight rein on tempo and soloistic inflections, but at the same time finding lots of fresh detail and unexpected orchestral perspectives. The performance of the Stravinsky is particularly rewarding in this regard.
