This is it. This is what we've all been building up to this summer. Fresh stationery supplies are in the shops, a vague hint of yellow is in the trees and it's Electric Picnic time. The days are getting a little bit shorter, meaning that the mischief gets going a little bit earlier and the lighting technicians on the main stage don't have to worry about silly twilight ruining the visuals, like they did back in June.

Friday night on the main stage will be very serious and moody with London Grammar and The xx headlining but on Saturday night – my god – the quadruple whammy of Run the Jewels, Phoenix, A Tribe Called Quest and Pete Tong: you better stay hydrated.

There will be some sturdy throwback action on the main stage on Sunday with Duran Duran headlining on Sunday night and Chaka freakin’ Khan playing at 7.15pm but the Body & Soul Main Stage has a flurry of Irish acts that you absolutely must highlight and underline on your timetable. New Jackson, Ships, Le Boom, Shookrah and Soulé.

Now, for those of you with tickets, let’s figure out the hows, the wheres and the whens. For those of you without tickets, we are so sorry for clogging up your feeds.

Are tickets still available?

Electric Picnic kicks off in Stradbally, Laois.

The festival sold out in March, thanks to a bunch of greedy goblins. If you keep an eye on #gigfairy on Twitter, you might be able to buy a ticket from someone who decided that they just can’t hack festivals anymore.

What time does it kick off at?

The public campsites – for weekend camping ticket holders only – will open at 9am on Friday. Sunday day ticket holders can enter from 11am on Sunday but note that there is no access to any of these campsites with a Sunday wristband.

And when can we actually see some music?

On Friday, the main area is open from 2pm until midnight and on Saturday and Sunday it’s open from 11am until midnight. On Friday, the late-night arena runs from midnight until 4am and on Saturday and Sunday, it’s from 8pm until 4am.

What’s the camping situation like?

The general campsite will be open from 9am on Friday morning and it will close at 1pm on Monday. Early Entry ticket holders, you madsers, can camp from 4pm on Thursday until 1pm on Monday. The general campervan and family campervan site will open at 4pm on Thursday and will close at 1pm on Monday.

Pink Moon Camping, PodPads and the FestiHuts are all sold out but if you want to take it easy and take the boutique route, you can still book yurts and bell tents with LPM Bohemia, tipis and yurts with Hearthworks, yurts and squrts with Cloudhouse and bell tents, tipis, tardis tipis and yurts with Silk Road Tents.

If you want to cook in the campsites, you should bring disposable BBQs or permitted cooking stoves only. Gas canisters (any size, this includes nitrous oxide, or similar, capsules), petrol burner and any form of aerosol (250ml) are not permitted. Stock up on Greenheat base camp cookers, solid fuel stoves, disposable BBQs, firelighters/firelighter stoves or methylated/“Trangia” spirit stoves if you want hot sausies in the morning.

Tell me, what about alcohol?

All bars will close at 1am. After 1am, up to four – let me repeat that – four cans per person will be permitted into the arena and there is a limit of 48 cans per person in the camping areas. Glass is not permitted anywhere in the festival.

What else can we do there?

You can go for a dip, a swim or a doggy paddle in the lake, with Picnic lifeguards on duty to watch out for everyone’s safety over the course of the weekend.

You can take it easy in the comedy tent, watch the world go by from a hammock in the Body & Soul area, catch a few talks and expand your mind, man in Mindfield or get lost in the Trailer Park.

How do I get there?

Bus Éireann is operating return services from Dublin, Cork and Galway to Electric Picnic 2017. Check buseireann.ie for more information.

Marathon Coaches are running from George’s Quay, Dublin city centre and the 3 Arena car park all weekend long and you can book tickets here. Spaces will fill up quickly so book early so you don’t have to beg for a lift down.

If you are taking the train, Portlaoise Train Station is the closest stop and Martley’s is running a shuttle bus service which will take you from the station to the festival site; tickets are €5 each way.

If you are cycling down, you should come through Gate 1a on the Abbeyleix Road. You can park your bike in the designated area beside the Tour de Picnic bike racks.

What access facilities have they got?

The disabled access campsite will have accessible toilets, fridges (for storing medication) and electrical hook-ups for wheelchair charging. Disabled guests can have up to three people camping with them and one car. There will be dedicated stewards in the disabled campsite providing 24-hour cover.

Disabled platforms/viewing areas will be at most of the stages at Electric Picnic and there will be strict 1+1 policy here.

Accessible toilet should be located beside each viewing platform. There will also be accessible toilets in the disabled campsite and located at the Medical Tent.

What about the weather?

Are you ready for this? Currently, as it stands, yr.no is telling us that there will be no rain on the plains of Stradbally. Bring your layers for warmth and pack your wellies and raincoats (plural) just in case… but things are looking good guys.

And security?

Do not bring large bags into the arena. All bags will be searched so there may be some delays getting in. There will be a separate lane for those without bags and those with bags smaller than A4/bum bags.

Banned items include: weapons, unofficial hi-viz and reflective jackets, spray cans, sound systems, professional cameras and video/audio equipment, portable laser equipment and laser pens, nitrous oxide, megaphones, illegal substances, drugs and legal/herbal highs, goods for unauthorised trading, glass, generators, fireworks and flares, Chinese or sky lanterns, animals, campfires and airhorns.
