Covers albums come in many shades – tributes, concepts and, potentially most interesting, personal journeys such as Sing Into My Mouth. Iron and Wine's Sam Beam and Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses are friends who, apparently, have long wanted to record a covers album. And just as a mixtape or playlist reveals lots about the author, so this collection sheds light on the duo's influences and sensibilities.
There are 12 tracks ranging from Beam's reading of David Byrne's This Must be the Place (Naive Melody) to Bridwell's expressive take on the obscure deep soul of Them Two's Am I A Good Man? The mix might be eclectic – songs by Sade, Bonnie Raitt and John Cale are set beside those of the Marshall Tucker Band and Ronnie Lane – but, washed in steel guitar, they all bend to the duo's natural sense of warm countrified companionship.
