The original Money Jungle brought Duke Ellington into contact (some say conflict) with its turbulent genius of the bass, Charles Mingus, and be-bop's pioneering drummer Max Roach. Drummer Terri Lynne Carrington follows up her Grammy-winning Mosaic project with a compelling homage to that iconic 1962 session, not only to acknowledge her own debt to Roach but, most pointedly, reclaim the sense of leftist defiance that animated so many US jazz musicians in the1960s. Alongside pianist Gerard Clayton and bassist Christian McBride are guest appearances from a roll call of big names, including Ellington alumnus Clark Terry. The recording is peppered with snippets of speeches from Martin Luther King, Barrack Obama and Ellington himself ("the music will be there when the money is gone").
