What is a 25-year-old Chicago-based acoustic guitarist doing picking up the scent of the 1970s British folk-jazz movement?

Well, Walker likes “that old music a lot, but what I like the most is how far out those guys were” – even his language echoes the time.

They include two ace Scottish guitarists now departed, John Martyn and Bert Jansch, a key figure in the band Pentangle. These two major influences dominate this distinctive second album. Walker says they were “inventive with folk, that’s what I’m into”.

The music can be abrasive or beguilingly serious but there is no denying its energy or ambition. And when it works as on the luminous On The Banks Of The Old Kishwaukee it is a fine fit.
