A band formed from the ashes of hardcore/punk bands Rulers of the Planet and Hope is Noise, Cork’s Slow Motion Heroes take a slightly different angle for their new musical project.
For the most part, the aggressive, thrashy riffs are pushed to the background, replaced by a sense of melody and understatement.
Their approach isn't always successful. Songs like the wistful Ozzy Osbourne- style No Sense to a Summer and At the End a Big Wave sound dated, their lyrics occasionally corny.
It's the meatier, heavier numbers like Oceans and If that are more satisfying, injecting pace and energy into a sluggish tracklisting.
It sounds like the band wanted to make a different kind of album, but their hardcore sensibilities unwittingly override their best intentions.
As a result, even they sound unconvinced at times.
