Marc Cerrone should really be as known for his delightful, dashing disco grooves as for his cheesy, camp album sleeves.
This new collection, whose cover sadly continues the kitsch theme of old, rounds up the best of the French producer’s solo material, work with his brilliant old band Kongas, and a bunch of spooky, minimalist soundtrack material.
At his best, Cerrone had an instinct for creating gleeful dancefloor fever, with Love in C Minor, Supernature and Got to Have Loving rocking and rolling into seductive, cosmic-disco wig-outs. But quality control issues crept into the mix, and his later work didn't always hit the target.
It will be interesting to see if this retrospective provides Cerrone with the profile lift enjoyed of late by fellow disco pioneers Giorgio Moroder and Nile Rodgers.
