Up until now, The Twilight Sad have tended to obscure their songwriting chops with layers of enveloping guitar noise or, as on their last outing, a stark, austere sonic aesthetic. Now, finally, the Scottish trio seem to have the confidence to let the songs speak for themselves. There are elements of their past throughout their fourth record – a Mogwai-esque guitar storm here, a pulsing drum machine there – but it's defined by the strength of the songs. The yearning Last January is a perfect first single; It Never Was The Same is stately and affecting; In Nowhere is monumental – and James Graham's heavily accented, highly emotional singing is used to its fullest throughout. This is the sound of a wonderful band coming of age. thetwilightsad.com
