Singer, songwriter, producer Santi White, aka Santigold, has proven herself to be a pop star with a keen eye on the mainstream and a mischievous love of the leftfield. Simultaneously representing pop culture and ripping its silliness to shreds, her new album 99c mixes, matches and mashes pop, R&B and rock'n'roll while bringing canny satire and self-awareness to bear on the worship of money, celebrity and what it means to be authentic.
Commenting on the concept behind the new album, White says: “We have no illusion that we don’t live in this world where everything is packaged. People’s lives, persona, everything, is deliberate, and mediated. It can be dark and haunting and tricky, and freak us out, but it can be also be silly and fun and we can learn to play with it.”
