A 225th anniversary commemoration of The Battle of Ballinamuck took place in Co Longford on Saturday afternoon.
The re-enactment of the battle was the highlight of a series of events to commemorate the last major engagement of the 1798 rebellion in Ireland, when United Irishmen and their French allies faced off against British forces.
The north Longford village pulled out all the stops for the event, the logistics including the recruitment and training of 300 pikemen.
Irish Times photographer Dara Mac Dónaill was on hand to capture what proved a spectacular and well-attended occasion.
Bad result for the home team but a fantastic day commemorating the 225th anniversary of the Battle of Ballinamuck. Also @paddycullivan brought more history to life as he told thrilling tales of the 1798 rebellion including the exploits of General Humbert & the brave Gunner McGee pic.twitter.com/S8uF6TCo8d
