A busy schedule of spring and summer auctions at Adam's concludes next weekend with a Sunday Interiors sale featuring more than 550 lots. The auction features silver, furniture, paintings, clocks, mirrors, porcelain, jewellery and assorted collectibles including yet further contents from Deepwell House, Blackrock, Co Dublin, which was sold earlier this year, and items from the collection of the late James O'Driscoll SC.
One of the most interesting lots is described as "the Bewley's Clock", a 19th-century fusee bracket clock made by McMaster and Son of 91 Grafton Street, Dublin. It was purchased by Ernest Bewley for his office when he opened the famous landmark cafe in Westmoreland Street in 1896, and is being sold by a family descendant. The estimate is €1,500-€2,500.
The top silver lot is an Irish George II beer jug, with the mark of 18th-century Dublin silversmith John Hamilton (€5,000-€8,000). An Edwardian silver cigarette case made in London in 1908 and inscribed “Presented to WG Mulcahy Esq: by the Officers 4th & 5th Battalions of the Royal Irish Regiment”, is €500-€700.
The jewellery section includes a 3.5 carat diamond four-stone ring (€8,000- €12,000); an Edwardian diamond and sapphire pendant (€2,000-€4,000); and an 18th-century memento brooch containing a lock of plaited hair surrounded by seed pearls (€200-€400).
Among the 165 lots of furniture is an Irish George III-style mahogany mural table (€4,000-€6,000); and, a George IV inlaid mahogany music stand (€500-€600).
Among the glass and china is a Lalique fruit bowl (€400-€600) and an Irish late 19th-century hand-painted porcelain vase by Herbert Cooper (€500-€800).
Highlights of the pictures are an attractive oil-on-canvas Portrait of a Lady Seated by Sir Gerald Festus Kelly, and Venetian Canal Scene by German painter, August Von Siegen, both estimated at €3,000-€5,000. For admirers of Victorian art, the top lot is Horses Feeding and Watering with Ducks and Chickens by John Frederick Herring Jnr (€3,000- €5,000).
Lot 577, Gentleman With Fruit And Wine, is an oil-on-canvas estimated at €300-€500, described as Irish school, early 19th century and the subject bears a passing resemblance to Bertie Ahern. Quirky items include a Victorian bed warmer, €80-€120; a late 19th-century bronze of Henry VIII on a Connemara marble plinth (€150-€250); and a Swiss enamel parasol handle, c1900 (€200-€300).
