Athy will benefit from a new link road to the planned extension of the motorway from Kilcullen to Waterford (scheduled for completion by 2010). Carlow (10 miles), Newbridge (18 miles), Portlaoise (19 miles), Naas (22 miles), Kilkenny (36 miles). The town council is doing a feasibility study on how to ease traffic congestion in the town. Plans will include a second bridge across the Barrow. But a solution is still some years away.

Trains:Athy is on the mainline Dublin-Waterford route and there are six trains each weekday to both destinations. The earliest departs at 6.41am serving Kildare, Newbridge, Hazelhatch and Celbridge and arrives in Heuston at 7.52am. Last train back from Dublin departs at 20.05pm and arrives in Athy at 21.06pm. The station is being spruced up and the platform extended to cope with increased numbers. New rolling stock and more frequent trains are promised over the next two years by Iarnród Éireann.

Buses:There are up to six buses a day on the Bus Éireann Expressway service which serves Dublin to Cork via Kilkenny and Clonmel. Private buses also run.
