Newly renovated 1930s family home

A corner house in Devitt Villas in Glenageary is on market for €595,000

Devitt Villas is a surprise, full of the kind of unassuming charm that goes unnoticed until you stop to have a look. Its 25 houses were built in the 1930s by Louis Monks, who was living in Glenageary at the time. Two storey, they have yellow brick facades with a redbrick trim and a definite artisan-between- the-wars look to them.

Number 7 Devitt Villas is a corner house, on a site that was big enough to allow for an extended kitchen/breakfastroom to the rear, an addition that in turn allows for a fourth bedroom – or playroom as at present – on the ground floor.

Owners Alma and Paul are selling, because of a “lifetime opportunity”, after just 18 months in situ.

“We didn’t expect to be moving,” Alma says, “so did a lot of work, insulating the entire house, flooring the attic, upgrading the bathroom, putting a stove in the sittingroom and more. We put our own stamp on the décor too.”

Now with a C2 Ber rating Alma says the house is “really cosy in the wintertime”.

The 106sq m (1,140sq ft) floor space has four bedrooms, reception room, open kitchen/breakfast/living area, utility, ground-floor shower room and family bathroom.

A patio-decking runs around the side and rear, there is off-street parking for two cars and a separate pedestrian entrance to the front door. The vendors bought for €528,000 18 months ago. Agent Sherry FitzGerald is now asking €595,000 for the private treaty sale.

Downstairs flooring, except for the tiled shower room, is of solid oak. The kitchen/ breakfast/dining area has a couple of velux windows and black granite worktops.

The sittingroom, a bright, white space, has a white-painted timber mantel and polished granite inset around the stove. There are built-in cupboards and a desk in the play/ bedroom.

The main, first-floor bedroom is to the front, one of the other bedrooms is also to the front, the other to the rear. Alma says the rear patio-decking is “the lowest of low maintenance”; it has high, whitewashed walls, a shed and double gates ensuring privacy.
