Agents generally talk about the lower, mid and top end of the residential market but now it appears there is a fourth category - the "greedy end". One leading estate agent, who coined the term, said that it is getting plenty of usage, as vendors continue to hold out for premium prices that may not be there, at least for the rest of this year. It's easy to recognise the "greedy end" when houses are withdrawn from auction and put back on the market at an asking price that is considerably higher, even wildly optimistic. Vendors would be loathe to see themselves in this bracket, but if their home is not selling, the likelihood is that it is over-priced. Many in this category are now pinning their hopes on the spring, when the market comes to life again. Traditionally, the strongest growth is in the spring, in house prices as well as in the garden, so they may be justified in holding off.
