33: Skoda Superb – simply put, it lives up to its name

Cliché klaxon; the Skoda Superb really does live up to its name, pretty much as it always has. The current version made appropriate amends for the lumpen styling of the previous model, and it remains sharp of line, if not exactly lingering of memory.

In the current Skoda idiom, it’s tidy without being exciting. That goes double fort he driving experience. Using the VW Group’s familiar MQB chassis system, the Superb goes about its driving with supreme competence and no small ability, but without a shred of enjoyment nor excitement.

That is true, oddly, for the range topping 280hp Sportline model, which is swift and assured, but essentially quite ordinary to drive. You’re better off by far going for a 150hp diesel, which is frugal and works well with the DSG dual-clutch automatic which amplifies the no-fuss vibe.

And you most definitely should go for the Combi estate, which not only looks better than the (actually a hatchback) saloon, but has the sort of space in the back normally reserved for aircraft hangers and outlet warehouses.
