65 Mazda 2: Pricey but undeniably enjoyable small hatch

Frugal petrol consumption and smooth performance outshine its faults

Mazda 2: It rivals the Fiesta and much more expensive Mini for driving pleasure

Really, the only thing holding back the Mazda 2 is its price tag. €15,995 is just a touch high as a base price for a small hatchback, even if the 2 is relatively well equipped. True, one of its key rivals, the Honda Jazz, is more expensive still but the Jazz has virtual-MPV space on its side in that debate, whereas space in the back of the 2 is at something of a premium. It’s also a car that can get very expensive, very quickly as you’ll notice if you check out the price of a GT-spec model (€19k!). Still, all this talk of price is to miss out on the 2’s undoubted high points, amongst which are its styling (successfully translating the handsome lines of the 6 and 3 into a smaller shape), its quality (the cabin looks a bit plain but there’s nothing wrong with the way it’s stuck together) and its engine (the 1.5-litre petrol in either 75hp or 90hp forms is smooth, revvy and frugal). It’s also very entertaining to drive, vying with the Ford Fiesta and even more expensive cars such as the Mini in the enjoyment stakes.
