Galway Pulse crowned Newspaper of the Year at Student Media Awards

University of Galway received seven awards overall

University of Galway’s Pulse has been crowned Newspaper of the Year at the 2023 National Student Media Awards.

The ceremony took place on Thursday April 20th 2023 at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. The annual event celebrates the achievements of students in media-related fields across the country.

The Newspaper of the Year Award was sponsored by The Irish Times. The category was judged by News Editor of The Irish Times, Mark Hennessy.

Overall, University of Galway received seven awards, including Podcast of the Year and European Commission Award for Journalism Relating to European Affairs, both awarded to student Tom O’Connor.

Closely following was Trinity College Dublin (TCD) which received six awards.

Trinity News (TCD) won Website of the Year, and TCD student Richard Wright received three awards on the night including Photographer of the Year, News Photographer of the Year and Feature Writer of the Year in News and Current Affairs.

Flávia Gouveia (UU) won Journalist of the Year, while Niamh Browne Motley of University College Cork (UCC) won Editor of the Year.

Hosted by Oxygen.ie, the Smedias showcase journalism across radio and television production, as well as in writing, and are judged by prominent figures within the Irish industry.
