Suspended Fianna Fáil councillor Lorcan Allen has resigned from several Wexford County Council committees, it emerged yesterday.
Cllr Allen made a statement to his colleagues after the party last week voted to ban the former junior minister for 12-months for circulating a bogus election letter from the Taoiseach. He will still sit as a member of Wexford County Council without the Fianna Fáil party whip.
At the start of yesterday's council meeting Cllr Allen issued a brief statement in which he offered to resign his committee seats until after his suspension was lifted. Some Wexford councillors said their colleague was making the correct decision.
Cllr Allen's suspension from the party will be reviewed after 12-months. Senior party officials last week voted to remove him from the national executive.
Mr Allen has admitted he sent out over 2,000 pre-paid Oireachtas envelopes. The letters to voters in Gorey urged residents to give him their first preference votes.
Mr Allen apologised to Mr Ahern for the unauthorised use of his signature. He also apologised to his party running mate Pat Rath, who failed to win a seat ithe recent local elections.
