The Association of Secondary School Teachers in Ireland (Asti) has this morning backed a motion supporting the nurses' campaign for better pay and working conditions.
An Asti spokesperson told ireland.comthat the motion, which was presented to delegates at the union's annual conference in Sligo, was "adopted unanimously".
The Asti said its members had passed the motion to support the right of the Irish Nurses' Organisation and the Psychiatric Nurses' Association to negotiate outside of the benchmarking process.
"The deficiencies and inflexibilities of the current benchmarking arbitration process must not be used to isolate, obstruct and demean a caring profession," it said.
Asti is the second union in the Irish Congress of Trade Unions to support the nurses' campaign, which will see further work stoppages tomorrow at four hospitals in Dublin and Roscommon.
Yesterday the Teachers Union of Ireland (TUI) also unanimously endorsed the INO's industrial action.
Dublin's Beaumont Hospital, St Ita's Psychiatric Service and St Joseph's Intellectual Disability Service, Portrane, Roscommon General Hospital and Roscommon Mental Health Services will be affected by the one-hour strike actions.
Nurses will protest outside each of the hospitals from 11am until noon, however, unions have vowed that all essential and emergency care will be provided during the stoppage.
