Some 20 Italian "Forza" members of the "Union for Europe" group have left the group to join the European People's Party. This takes the EPP to 200 members, just 14 behind the largest group in the Parliament, the Party of European Socialists. The EPP group, based on Christian Democrat parties (including Fine Gael), has over the years widened its scope to include other Centre/Right parties from Spain, Greece, the UK (Conservatives) and now Italy. The switch also means that the Liberals, with 41 members, are now the third-largest group in Parliament.
