Cavan firm says three-day week temporary

A Cavan-based firm that put its 350 employees on a three-day week has said the move is temporary. Crompton Greaves Power Systems Ireland Ltd, on the Dublin Road, told its staff this week they would be working a three-day week from July. The company, which manufactures transformers, is part of an international group with headquarters in Mumbai, India.

In a statement yesterday, it said moving to short-term employment was a decision it did not take lightly. Markets in western Europe had slowed down, but it was “actively engaged in tendering for business in other markets”.

“We believe that the option chosen of short-term working is a measure that is seen as temporary and the firm believes that the market will improve towards the end of the year, at which time we will need all our trained staff and skills to meet demand.”
