Paris - President Chirac has called for a worldwide alliance of speakers of Romance languages - such as French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian - in order to beat back the growing supremacy of English.

"Faced with the power of a dominant system, the others must unite and assemble their forces - in order to restore equality of opportunity and to make their voices heard," Mr Chirac told a symposium at the Sorbonne.
