A smiling Mr Clinton posed for photographs with Sister Nirmala and waved to the crowd of onlookers and reporters. He drew a loud cheer when he greeted the crowd in the Bengali language.
Mr Clinton spent just over an hour at the building where Mother Teresa lived until she died at the age of 87 on September 5th, 1997.
Teresa, locally known as the saint of the gutters, set up a wide network of charities to help the poor. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
Mr Clinton had earlier visited Bhuj in western India, where a devastating earthquake killed some 30,000 people in January.
He also went to India's commercial capital, Bombay, before travelling to Calcutta.
