The Department of Public Enterprise has announced a competition to select the operator of Dublin's first light rail lines which are expected to open in 2003.
The franchise being offered is for the operations of the Tallaght to Connolly Station line and the Sandyford to St Stephen's Green line.

Both lines will have a total capacity of 7,400 passengers per hour and a detailed contract is being developed with a view to maximising the operator's incentives to encourage people to use the system.
Speaking at the launch of the competition, the Minister for Public Enterprise, Ms Mary O'Rourke, said a range of companies from all over Europe are expected to submit bids for the contract.
"Initial revenue projections for these lines are very positive and likely to attract a range of bidders with experience of operating similar transport in the UK and Europe," said Ms O'Rourke.
"The franchise will be awarded for a term of five years from commencement of passenger services with an option to renew for a further five years."
At the end of the competition the Minister will award the contract via the proposed Railway Procurement Agency which the Government expects to formally establish by the end of the year.
