Aldi pulls sausage rolls over labelling concerns

Sausage rolls sold under Kelly’s label omitted sulphites which can cause allergic reactions

Aldi has been forced to pull three varieties of sausage rolls from the shelves of its Irish supermarkets after an ingredient which could potentially cause allergic reactions was not included on the packaging.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) ordered the recall of three varieties of sausage rolls being sold under the Kelly's label because the presence of sulphites was not declared on the boxes.

“This may make them unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of sulphur dioxide or sulphites,” the FSAI warned.

A spokeswoman for Aldi told the Irish Times that “routine product testing highlighted a labelling issue in relation to our Kelly’s sausage roll products.

“We immediately informed the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) of the matter and removed the products from sale. We are now investigating the issue with our supplier.”

Sulphites have been know to trigger allergic reactions particularly in people suffering from asthma.

Anyone who has bought the product and has concerns will be able to return them to any Aldi store for a full refund although there is no suggestion that the products are in any way harmful.
