Cork County Council is seeking funding from the National Roads Authority (NRA) for remedial work on a junction on the main Cork-Macroom road where a teenager died in a traffic accident this year.
Cork county engineer Mr Edmond Flynn said yesterday the council had prepared a plan of works for Currahaly junction at Farran on the main Cork-Killarney Road (the N22) where Adam Connolly (13) was killed three months ago when the car he was in was in collision with a lorry.
Mr Flynn said the improvements would include signing, lining, creating a right-turning lane and junction definition posts at Currahaly Cross.
The matter was raised yesterday by Fine Gael councillor Mr Michael Creed, who expressed concern about road safety between the end of the Ballincollig by-pass near Ovens and the Currahaly junction where five people have been killed and 40 people seriously injured since 1990.
One of the main campaigners for improved safety, Mr Tom Connolly, whose son died at Currahaly Cross on April 10th, said yesterday that residents had had a positive meeting with NRA officials last week.
The NRA had asked them back for a further meeting on July 27th, when it would present a finalised report on what it proposed to do at the junction.
