London - The former British cabinet minister, Mr Jonathan Aitken, was yesterday fighting to keep his collection of books after creditors closed in to seize his assets, including his Rolex watch.

Mr Aitken (56), a one-time multi-millionaire, faces a possible jail sentence at a court hearing next week after admitting perjury and perverting the course of justice during his failed libel case in 1997 against the Guardian and Granada television. He declared himself bankrupt last month and owes £2.4 million in legal costs.
