A 25-year-old Polish man was found by ambulance personnel this morning at the bottom of a stairs on Main Street in Bagenalstown, Co Carlow.

A postmortem will be carried out later today on the body of a man found in a house in Co Carlow early this morning.

The 25-year-old Polish man was found by ambulance personnel at the bottom of a stairs on Main Street in Bagenalstown at about 12.15am.

It is understood the man, whose name has not een released by gardaí, lived in another house on Kilcarrig Street, elsewhere in Bagenalstown. He was in the house on Main Street overnight with a number of other Polish men.

The men had been drinking and it is believed one of the people living there contacted the emergency services after midnight to say the 25-year-old had suffered injuries after falling down the stairs.

The scene of the incident was preserved this morning and the deceased's body was brought to Waterford Regional Hospital where an autopsy will be carried out this afternoon by assistant state pathologist Dr Khalid Jabbar.

Detectives are awaiting the results of the examination, and confirmation of the cause of death, before deciding on the direction of the investigation into the man’s death.

However, one officer involved in the inquiry said that, while the incident is officially being treated as “suspicious”, gardaí don’t expect the autopsy to indicate that another person was involved in the death.
