Explosive device made safe in west Dublin

An explosive device found in west Dublin this evening has been made safe by the Army.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team were called to a house near the Mourne Road area of Drimnagh by the Garda after a suspect device was discovered.

They arrived at the scene at 5.20pm. A cordon and traffic restrictions had been put in place for public safety, with a number of nearby houses evacuated.

The device was then rendered safe at the scene without the need for a controlled explosion. The area was declared safe at 5.55pm.

The component parts of the device were taken to a safe military location for further technical examination.

An Army spokesman confirmed the device was viable with potential to cause serious damage or injury.

Gardaí are investigating the incident.
