Man questioned over assault on Dublin footballer released without charge

Dublin footballer Jonny Cooper has released a statement of thanks for the support received in the wake of a stabbing incident 10 days ago.

A 31-year-old man arrested in relation to the serious assault on Mr Cooper was released without charge earlier today.

Gardaí in Mountjoy arrested the man yesterday and he was questioned at Mountjoy Garda station. A file has been sent to the DPP.

Mr Cooper was found with multiple stab wounds on the pavement on Dorset Street at about 5.30am on Saturday week last.

CCTV images recorded at the scene show him sitting on the steps at the front of a Georgian house.

Mr Cooper highlighted the support given to him since the incident, particularly mentioning those who helped him on the night.

His statement said: “To all the professional personnel that helped and took care of me on the night and since the event - I thank you. I will never forget you for it.

“Dublin is a great place; it is a safe place and it is my home. If nothing else, this can be a lesson that when you’re out, stay safe and stick together,” the footballer stated.

He said the Garda and relevant authorities were handling the matter and that he had “ every faith” in their commitment to securing a positive outcome.

“I have moved on now to focus again on the things that matter in my life: family, friends, work and football.

“I will not be making any further comment on the matter and would greatly appreciate it if that can be respected.”
