A man has been hospitalised after being subjected to a serious assault in Tallaght, west Dublin. The victim, who is in his 40s, sustained serious head injuries and has been transferred for specialist head trauma treatment to Beaumont Hospital, north Dublin.

The incident comes just days after Assistant Commissioner Anne Marie Cagney, who is in charge of policing in Dublin, revealed while crime levels in the capital had not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels, assaults causing serious harm had bucked that trend. They were almost 10 per cent higher in the first four months of this year.

The latest serious assault now under investigation occurred at a playground in Mac Uilliam estate, Tallaght, late on Saturday night.

The alarm was raised by local people at around 11.40pm and when gardaí and paramedics arrived they found the victim unconscious and having sustained head injuries.
