Police in Spain are investigating an alleged sexual assault on a teenage girl from Ireland in Tenerife in the early hours of last Thursday morning.

Spanish media is reporting that the incident happened in Playa de las Americas which is a popular holiday resort in the south of the island.

The web site ElDia.es says the 13-year-old girl was assaulted by a “white, European-looking” man on a beach after she became separated from her brother.

The girl is understood to have been taken to hospital after the assault.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs said the Department “does not comment on reports of that nature.”

A spokesman for the police on the island confirmed they were investigating the alleged incident.

However he said he could not comment further as a “secreto de sumario” or ban on reporting had been imposed because of the age of the alleged victim.
