Gardai in Cork are questioning a man and a woman following a shooting incident in the city which left another woman with a serious injury to her neck.
The woman (21) was in the sitting room of her house in the Hollywood Estate in Hollyhill on the city’s northside around 1.15am when a shot was fired through a downstairs window.
The woman sustained a gunshot wound to her neck but managed to raise the alarm and was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where she underwent surgery.
It is understood that the woman’s injury is serious but not life-threatening and gardai are hoping that she will recover over the coming days and be well enough to make a statement to them.
Gardai from Gurranabraher were quickly on the scene and arrested a 29-year-old man a short distance away in Shanakiel while they also arrested a woman (22) in a nearby car.
The pair were arrested under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act which allows gardai detain suspects for offences involving the use of firearms for up to five days in total.
The man was taken to Gurranebraher Garda station for questioning while the woman is being questioned by detectives at the Bridewell Garda station about the shooting.
Garda technical experts are due to carry out an examination on the bullet or pellet removed from the injured woman during surgery to try and establish the type of gun used in the shooting.
Gardai have also carried out a number of follow up searches including of a house in the Shanakiel area of Cork’s northside but they have not recovered any firearm to date.
Gardai believe the shooting is linked to an ongoing personal feud between a number of individuals in the Hollyhill area which also saw another family home attacked last night and windows smashed.
Anyone who saw anything suspicious in the Hollyhill area last night or has any information that can assist gardai is asked to contact Gurranebraher Garda Station in confidence on 021-4946200.
