A decision on whether Mr Tomás Ó Dulaing should be dismissed as principal of the Gaelscoil in Dunboyne is expected to be made within about a week, according to informed sources.

In the meantime, a team of leading educationalists are carrying out a review of the issue of religious ethos on behalf of the school's patron, An Foras Pátrúnachta.

The review will not seek to mediate in the dispute over Mr Ó Dulaing's position, but instead will examine the broader issues of how religion is taught in the inter-denominational school.

It is being carried out by Brother Luke Monahan of the Marino Institute and Mr Martin Daly, a management consultant and principal of CUS College in Dublin's Leeson Street.

An Foras Pátrúnachta, which is the patron body for 38 schools throughout the State, held hearings into the principal's conduct last Saturday and on Thursday night.

It will now study the transcripts of the proceedings before making its decision.

The local board of the school has requested An Foras Pátrúnachta to dismiss Mr Ó Dulaing, but the ultimate decision is a matter for the patron. The principal and his union, the INTO, are hoping for his reinstatement.

The INTO has been critical of the board of management's decisions to suspend and seek the dismissal of Mr Ó Dulaing.

However, last night an INTO spokesman expressed confidence that An Foras Pátrúnachta would give fair and equitable consideration to the case. The school has been endeavouring for the last two years to come up with an agreed policy on the teaching of religion.Last summer such a policy was agreed by the board and parents, but it ran contrary to the policy of the patron body.

The issue at stake is whether Protestant and Catholic children should be taught religion in school hours. The principal wanted to move controversial areas, such as preparation for communion, outside normal school hours.
